Edinburgh Previews- John Hastings and Phil Jerrod

Hullabalooman Comedy is very excited to be hosting it’s first Edinburgh Preview this June. We have two superb award winning comedians treating us to a sneaky preview of what they’ll be getting up to in Edinburgh this year.

JOHN HASTINGS

John Hastings has been performing stand up all over his native Canada since 2006. Since winning the 2010 Irwin Barker Canadian Homegrown Championship at the Montreal Just for Laughs Festival, he has been nominated for a Canadian Comedy award in the category of Best Newcomer and was named one of the five "comedians to watch" by the Canadian Comedy Network. He was the youngest featured performer at the 2011 Winnipeg Comedy Festival and was the youngest and only Canadian finalist of the 2011 San Francisco International Comedy Festival. His stand up comedy special was chosen to be the last ever, on the 15-show run of Canada’s only stand up comedy showcase program “Comedy Now.” After 6 years John also won the prestigious COCA Comedian of the year award for 2012. Now his comedic pursuits take him to the United Kingdom and he nervously okay with being here.

"A strong calling card for a thoughtful and observant comic with enjoyably wry sensibilities" - Chortle

"He was fast, polished and had an original slant. We will hear more of him." -BroadwayBaby.com

"He hits that sweet spot" - Now Magazine
'Shockingly good' (Montreal Gazette)

'Particularly awesome' (San Francisco Examiner).

***** - Mirror

PHIL JERROD:

Phil Jerrod began his stand-up career underneath an Angus Steakhouse in 2012. Since then he has failed his PhD, walked out of his job in publishing and been entertaining audiences up and down the country with his elegant rants on the often unfathomable problems of modern life.

“Insightful, despairing wit ⭑⭑⭑⭑” – The Scotsman

“Razor sharp timing ⭑⭑⭑⭑” – Ed Fest Magazine

“A very funny hour of stand-up ⭑⭑⭑⭑” – Broadway Baby

Live Music : Harry & The Gondolas

A three-piece alternative folk band bringing a selection of raw, foot-stomping songs infused with dynamic harmonies and bubbly bass lines. The trio are beginning to gain the attention of the UK folk scene, developing a strong following at notable headline and support shows, appearing on significant festival lineups and recently conducting European and Australian tours. After a highly successful release of their debut single 'No Country For Old Men', Harry & The Gondolas are establishing themselves as a driven, creative and versatile new folk outfit. Their upcoming EP is just the start of a very busy year for the band...

"With influences such as Mumford and Sons, Bears Den and Ben Howard, it is clear why Harry and the Gondolas are the perfect accompaniment to go with that cold cider you’re craving. Their chilled nu-folk, acoustic sound and Gould’s deep resonating vocals carry the crowd toe tapping and hand clapping through fast-paced Irish-folk to mellow ballads." - Bristol Live Magazine

Christopher Matthewson
“A really good guitar player” – Ralph Rolle (Chic)

"A truly fine guitar player; an exceptional voice" – Jo Harman (Female Vocalist of the year 2014)

"Christopher Matthewson. Remember the name. He's signed to a different management company to our own but that doesn't stop me from marking him out as one to watch. Chris has got something special" - Mark Ede (BigiAm Music Management)

Daisy Chute (solo)
Daisy Chute is a folk/americana artist who has released 3 platinum-selling studio albums with Universal Records. As well as an award-winning singer and songwriter (Classical Brits, BBC, UKSWF), Daisy has worked alongside rock royalty Ray Davies and Kasabian and was a featured vocalist on Radiohead's latest album A Moon Shaped Pool. With songwriting comparisons to Joni Mitchell (BBC Radio), Daisy's singing has been described as “Exquisitely delicious. Delicate, like a gossamer-winged creature made out of spun gold." Tony Moore (Soho Radio, The Bedford)

Euro-Mernet Film Club : Fire At Sea

"a daring hybrid of captured footage and deliberate storytelling that allows us to consider what documentary can do. It is urgent, imaginative and necessary filmmaking." Meryl Streep

"a distinctive, humane cinematic style" and being "a collection of tiny details that morph, almost by osmosis, into a shocking excavation of the mechanics of crisis." Andrew Pulver, The Guardian

Dear friends, we would like to invite you to our next film screening. This time we have the award-winning Italian documentary, Fire at Sea (Fuocoammare)

Winner of the Golden Bear for Best Film at the Berlin Film Festival 2016, Gianfranco Rosi’s incisive, poignant and deeply moving portrait of the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa - and the humanitarian crisis occurring in the seas around it - is both a masterly work of documentary filmmaking and a timely call for urgent action.

Situated 150 miles south of Sicily, Lampedusa has hit headlines as the first port of call for hundreds of thousands of African and Middle Eastern refugees hoping to make a new life in Europe. After spending months living on the island and engaging with its inhabitants, Rosi accumulated an incredible array of footage, portraying the history, culture and daily lives of the islanders. Focusing on 12-year-old Samuele, as he explores the land and attempts to gain mastery of the sea, the film slowly builds a breathtakingly naturalistic portrait of the Lampedusan people and the events that surround them.

At the end of the film screening, we will also have a special intro session to observe the European Week against Racism and to mark 21st March, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. We will distribute free info packs with resources and an events listing where you can find further info on day actions.

Book launch: The End of Politicians: Time for a Real Democracy

Is it time to do democracy differently? Can we fix our broken politics? Come and hear about the alternative to our tired electoral democracy, about the groups experimenting with new ways of doing democracy (in particular the UK's first G1000) and the campaign to institute this democratic alternative by putting deliberating, informed, ordinary citizens back into politics.

Hazey Jane are an English folk-indie quartet from London. Hackney based, harmony driven and easily confused, the band are indebted to Nick Drake, CSNY and John Prine. From such artists, Hazey Jane have derived their own bona fide craft of songmanship, exhibited most poignantly throughout their recent EP, 'Us on a Wire'. Recorded at Urchin Studios, Dalston, and produced by band confidants Mr Sander Van Laere (Michael Kiwanuka) and the right honourable Marcel Van Limbeek (Tori Amos).

“Us On A Wire is a phenomenal first offering, brilliantly laying bare the sincerity of Hazey Jane's writing” - Middle Tennessee Music

Ruby Confue is an Urban Jazz singer originally from Swindon, now based in London. As well as jazz, her music incorporates elements of hip hop, spoken word, R&B, funk and soul.

“…a Shakespeare spouting urban mega-star in waiting. Cleverly blending elements of Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk and R&B with less obvious constituent parts such as spoken word, poetry and theatre into a strangely coherent psychedelic whole is an impressive feat, and one which is carried off with some panache.” - lighterthiefmusic

SMUT SLAM : where sex and storytelling collide

You know what a poetry slam is, and maybe you know about story slams, too. Now it's time for Brighton's first-ever SMUT SLAM, a fast-paced storytelling open mic featuring sex stories told by the people who lived them: YOU.

The theme for this SMUT SLAM is, appropriately, “FIRSTS."

YES. This could be mind-blowing or awkward, probably both at the same time.

SMUT SLAMMERS sign up on the night to tell a 5-minute dirty story, based on their real lives, and a lucky eight to ten names will be drawn at random. NOT A SMUT SLAMMER? Don’t worry. The audience is in for a good time at SMUT SLAM! Sit back and enjoy. All we ask is: - No interrupting. - No heckling. - No necking in the front row.

SMUT SLAM is CREATED by Cameryn Moore, an award-winning playwright/performer, sex activist and educator, and, oh yeah: a phone sex operator. She is super excited to introduce Brighton and Smut Slam to each other!
